If you own a small business and are looking for a why to improve your local leads, client, and customers then you would benefit from a “local listings” account with Google.
Before you get started consider creating a secondary email address for your google account. Since this email address will be displayed on your Google local listing it may end up with a lot of spam. This secondary address will protect your primary domain name from spam. Use an email program like gmail.com, and use your business address: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Google gmail is a great way to go for your secondary email account, as it has a very nice spam filter and lots of storage space.
Now you need to do is set-up a Google user account. With that done you are ready to get started: www.google.com/placesforbusiness.
You will need the following information to add to your local listing:
- Your Name
- Your Business Name
- Business Address (You can choose to not have this displayed.)
- Business Phone Number
- Email Address
- Website Address
- Short description of your business and services
- 1 to 5 Categories that best describe your business
- Payment Options
- Photo ready for upload
In working on the wording of your business description you will want to carefully consider your “keywords”. Search engines use keywords to better match websites/businesses with those searching the web. First, ask what words would be used in a search engine by someone looking for your products and services? Those are your keywords. When writing your description, or website, be sure to use these keywords. They will help people find you through the search engines.
Once you have entered all your information you will need to verify you account with a pin number. Google will mail you a post card with the pin on it. This takes about 5 to 10 days. When it arrives go back into your account, and enter the 4 digit pin number. Now your listing is ready to be published on Google.
The listing will provide visitors with your local listing information, including your website address, email address, phone number, the description your gave and more….
You can view and update your local listing at www.google.com/placesforbusiness.
